Gravio and Zebra: Seamlessly Connecting Your Physical and Digital Worlds

Unlock powerful, no-code automation by connecting Zebra's industry-leading RFID and printing hardware with the Gravio edge computing platform.

We are thrilled to announce a significant enhancement to the Gravio ecosystem: seamless, native integration with a range of Zebra Technologies hardware, including RFID readers, label printers, and RFID printers. This collaboration, supported by Datum Technologies, a Zebra reseller, empowers businesses to build sophisticated, event-driven automation solutions that connect physical assets to digital workflows with unprecedented ease.

Imagine your warehouse, retail floor, or manufacturing line operating with a new level of intelligence. With Gravio and Zebra, when a pallet of goods arrives, a Zebra RFID reader instantly captures the data. Gravio processes this event in real-time, updates your inventory database, and triggers a Zebra printer to instantly generate a corresponding confirmation label—all in a fraction of a second, with no human intervention required.

How It Works: The Power of the Edge

This powerful combination is made possible by Gravio's unique edge computing architecture. As shown in the diagram below, the Gravio platform runs on-premise, acting as a central nervous system for all your connected devices.

Here’s a typical workflow:

  1. Capture: A Zebra On-Premise RFID Reader detects an RFID tag on an item, person, or vehicle.
  2. Process: The reader sends this data to the On-Premise Gravio Edge Device. Gravio's logic engine processes the information. This can be combined with data from other sources like computer vision cameras, environmental sensors, or cloud APIs.
  3. Act: Based on your pre-defined, no-code logic, Gravio triggers one or more actions. This could be sending a command to a Zebra Label and RFID Tag Printer to create a new tag, illuminating a notification light, updating a SQL database, pushing a message to a dashboard, or calling a cloud-based service.

Real-World Use Cases, Today

The practical applications for this integration are limitless, transforming key operations across industries:

  • Logistics & Supply Chain: Automate check-in and check-out processes at loading docks. As trucks pass through an RFID gate, instantly log their arrival/departure times and print routing slips.
  • Retail Inventory Management: Gain real-time visibility of your stock. As items are moved from the stockroom to the sales floor, automatically update inventory levels and even trigger re-order alerts.
  • Asset Tracking: Monitor the location and status of high-value equipment within a facility. Create alerts if an asset moves into an unauthorized area.
  • Manufacturing: Track work-in-progress (WIP) on the production line. As a product moves to the next station, its status is updated, and a new instruction label is printed automatically.
  • Warehouse Management Systems: Enhance workflows by adopting RFID scanning technologies into existing processes that may be still on barcode level operations. This can greatly reduce the time to check for stocks, manage inventory and manage logistics processes. Our partner, Datum Technologies is an expert in this field!

Why This Matters

  • Speed: By processing data at the edge, response times are nearly instantaneous. There's no reliance on cloud latency for critical operational decisions.
  • Simplicity: Build complex workflows using Gravio's intuitive, no-code Action and Trigger system. You don't need to be a developer to connect hardware and automate processes.
  • Flexibility: Gravio connects not only to Zebra devices but to a vast ecosystem of sensors, cameras, and software platforms (MQTT, SQL, Webhooks, LLMs), making it the perfect hub for all your automation needs.
  • Reliability: On-premise processing ensures your core operations continue to run even if your internet connection is unstable.
